The academy was founded in 1841 "to aid in increasing in the community, a taste for Literature and Science...[which] would bring learned men in contact with each other, furnish an opportunity for exchanging views on great and important subjects, and operate as a stimulus in the pursuits of science." The celebration of the 150th anniversary of the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in the Dartmouth College Case was held on April 9, 1969, in the Court of Claims, Washington, D.C.; the celebration also commemorated the career of Daniel Webster, the advocate who defended the case before the Supreme Court.
